Scientists have newly developed a transgenic flies that can be laser-controlled to control their behavior, allowing lazy flies to become active, start crawling, jumping or flying away. In the past, when scientists were studying the neural basis of animal behavior, they generally used electrodes to stimulate nerves. However, these methods are invasive and may impede or even paralyze the animal's actions, and it is impossible for the electrodes to touch every neuron in the entire nervous system. Neurobiologists at the Yale University School of Medicine in the United States have implanted a gene from a rat into a fruit fly, which encodes an ion channel protein. In the presence of the bioenergy molecule ATP in the environment, this ion channel allows charged particles to pass through the cell membrane, thereby passing electrical pulses. Subsequently, the researchers injected Drosophila with ATP molecules that were inactive due to being enveloped by another molecule. Exposure of Drosophila with UV lasers frees the ATP molecules from binding and initiates ion channels that stimulate the nerves of Drosophila by electrical signals. Experiments have shown that if the ion channel protein is expressed in Drosophila crawling dopaminergic neurons, the slacker flies will become hyperactive under laser irradiation. If the ion channel is expressed in a large nerve that controls flies' escape response, the laser can make the fly fly around, shake its wings, and fly away. The researchers said that this technology can be used to study many other biological activities, such as courtship, mating and eating.
