N-cadherin (CDH2), also known as cadherin-2 (CDH2) or neurocadherin (NCAD), is a protein encoded by the human CDH2 gene. N-cadherin is a transmembrane protein that is expressed in a variety of tissues and functions to mediate cell-cell adhesion. In the myocardium, N-cadherin is a component of the adhesion junction located on the insertion disk and functions to mechanically and electrically couple adjacent cardiomyocytes. Although mutations in CDH2 have not been associated with human disease to date, changes in the expression and integrity of N-cadherin proteins have been observed in various forms of disease, including human dilated cardiomyopathy.
N-cadherin consists of 906 amino acids ( click to understand the sequence ) and the theoretical molecular weight is 99.8 KDa. Phosphorylation modifications are present at the S95 and S135 sites. It has been reported that high expression of N-cadherin in the cytoplasm can result in a significant increase in the effects of a large number of oncogenes.
