1, seedling stage
At this stage, the absorption of all fertilizers by watermelons is relatively small and only accounts for a very small part of the total amount.
2, extension period
At this stage, the absorption of fertilizer for watermelon is greatly improved compared to the seedling period, accounting for about one-tenth of the total amount of fertilizer. Fertilizer should be dominated by nitrogen fertilizer and supplemented with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.
3, flowering period
At this stage, the demand for phosphate fertilizer is relatively large. A certain amount of phosphate fertilizer is conducive to promoting reproductive growth, preventing wilting leaves from weakening, and increasing the fruit setting rate.
4, fruiting period
During the period from fruit dewetting to late enlargement, watermelon plants have the highest absorption of substances and nutrients, dry matter accumulation accounts for about 70% of the total, nitrogen absorption reaches 68%, and phosphorus absorption. Up to 64%, the absorption of potassium reached 66%. During the expansion and ripening of watermelon, the absorption of fertilizer began to decline again.
In general, the nutrient uptake of watermelon was less in the early stage, more in the middle and late stages, and less in the end stage; the absorption of large amounts of elements in the whole growth stage of watermelon was the highest in potassium, followed by nitrogen, and the least in phosphorus.
The critical period of nutrition of nitrogen and phosphorus in watermelon is at the seedling stage, and the critical period of potassium nutrition is at the extension period. The maximum nutrient efficiency of watermelon is in the period of nectar.
