Hunan reader Mr. Meng asked: I am 67 years old this year. Last year, I put two stents for coronary heart disease, and then recovered well. There are always symptoms of dizziness this year, and doctors recommend doing an MRI. However, I heard that MRI will remove and displace the heart stent. Can I have a stent for MRI?
Yu Mengyue, Professor of Cardiology, Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences: NMR is a kind of examination for tissue imaging using the principle of different attenuation of magnetic fields in different tissues. It is widely used in medical examinations. Due to the existence of a strong magnetic field and resonance, there is a possibility that the magnetic metal in the body will generate heat, generate an abnormal current, or be attractive to it, causing displacement. Therefore, many patients have greater doubts about MRI after cardiac stenting.
In fact, the heart stent currently used is made of stainless steel, nickel-titanium alloy, cobalt-chromium alloy, and metals such as platinum, gold, and rhodium. Most of them are weakly magnetic or non-magnetic metals, and the magnetic field exerts a very weak force. At the same time, because the stent can be wrapped by vascular tissue after implantation, the stability is very good, so the magnetic field force will not affect it, and the temperature rise caused by resonance usually does not exceed 1 degree Celsius. Under normal circumstances, the stent can be stably combined with the blood vessel after 6-8 weeks of implantation. Therefore, it is very safe to perform MRI after 8 weeks of stent implantation.
For patients who have just implanted a stent, if MRI is necessary, it can be considered. Studies abroad have conducted an MRI of 200 patients who were implanted within 1 week of stent implantation. The results showed that less than 2% of patients had mild chest pain and were able to recover quickly. Some studies even performed MRI on patients who were implanted with stainless steel stents for 1 to 3 days, and followed up for 9 months. Only 4% of patients had adverse reactions. These studies have shown that the risk of adverse reactions to early MRI in stent implantation is relatively low.
Therefore, if there is a need for an MRI, patients who have been implanted for more than 8 weeks can be safely examined. Patients who are implanted within 8 weeks can also be examined if MRI can bring significant benefits.
