The reporter learned from the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the research team of the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Institute of Biophysics, Tang Hong and Chen Xinwen, has cooperated for many years to successfully develop the world's first hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, using mice with intact immune systems. An animal model that fully reflects the natural history of HCV infection and the progression of chronic viral hepatitis. Relevant research results were published online in the cover of "Cell Research" on August 27th.

Viral hepatitis kills nearly 1.4 million people each year. The World Health Organization calls it a "silent killer." According to Chen Xinwen and Tang Hong, their research results not only provide the most advanced materials to date to reveal the pathogenesis of hepatitis C, but also fundamentally promote the development of vaccines and drugs for hepatitis C prevention and treatment.

At present, because HCV menstrual blood infection is usually asymptomatic, and the ability of hepatitis C prevention and control in countries and regions with low economic and medical levels is low, nearly 200 million people in the world and more than 40 million people in China have HCV. Chronic hepatitis C is the leading cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Although the anti-viral treatment effect of chronic hepatitis C is significant, the toxic side effects of the drug are large, and the drug withdrawal virus rebounds, and the delivery rate of the new drug is far behind the emergence of the virus-resistant mutant strain. It is only a dream for humans to completely eliminate HCV.

Even more worrisome is the fact that, like HIV, it is very difficult to develop a vaccine against such highly mutated RNA viruses that can escape immune killing. In the past 10 years, scientists have been exploring animal models of HCV infection. The development of an animal model of HCV persistent infection is of great significance for the identification of how HCV continues to infect and cause liver damage, as well as the development of vaccines and drugs.

Nowadays, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, viremia has appeared in both the liver and peripheral blood of mice, and it has been going on for nearly two years. Team member Dr. Zhang Chao said, "We have been able to observe how HCV escapes the immune system in mice, and how antiviral drugs reduce virus titers." (Reporter Qiu Chenhui)
