The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the world's largest medical research and research funding agency. It provides global funding for major diseases that threaten human health. The annual funding is up to $30.1 billion, of which more than 80% are approved. Nearly 50,000 competitive grants have been awarded to more than 2,500 universities, medical schools and other research institutions around the world, encouraging them to engage in research in the field of biomedicine for the healthy development of life for all. This kind of funding and the list of funding agencies and projects is, in a sense, a weather vane in the field of life health research.
The Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News (GEN) recently released the "2014 Top 50 Universities Supported by NIH" list, which is based on the amount of NIH FY2014 funding and the total number of projects.
Similar to 2013, the California region is still the biggest winner, with eight schools on the list, six of which are schools in the University of California System (UC, a group of 10 universities in California); followed by New York State ( Six), Massachusetts (4), Illinois (3), and Texas (3), the total number of schools in these five states is almost half of the list.
