A few days ago, Boston Children's Hospital surgeons used 3D printing technology to help with a complicated brain surgery. The patient was a severely bulging baby. Doctors used a 3D printed model of the deformed skull in the surgical planning. It is reported that part of the brain of the patient is growing in a deformed skull.
It is understood that when the child is not born, his prospective parents Sierra and Dustin Yoder are told that their child Bentley suffers from a rare disease called brain swelling, or they are called cranial fissures. Naturally, I am worried that my child can't keep it. During routine ultrasound examinations, doctors found that Bentley's brain partially protruded through the gap in his skull, and the diagnosis was grim: Bentley was unlikely to survive too long after birth, even if he survived, his The brain also doesn't work.
Both Sierra and Dustin came from Sugar Creek, Ohio, and they accepted the news, but decided to give birth to the child until the child died, thus rejecting the termination of pregnancy. The child was born on October 31, 2015. To everyone's surprise, he seems to have normal brain function, even though a large sac protrudes from behind his head. A few months later, except for Bentley's head, which is still a boat shape, he developed normally and cried when he was hungry. This energetic young man ignored the doctor's diagnosis.
At four months of age, Bentley was taken to the Cleveland Clinic by his parents, who thought the brain outside Bentley could be used, but putting the brain back into the skull was a difficult task. Optimists Sierra and Dustin found Dr. John Meera of Boston Children's Hospital, whose team of surgeons examined Bentley. They found that the part of the brain that protruded from the skull was responsible for cognitive functions, such as motor nerve control, problem solving, and vision, and therefore could not be removed. However, they may be able to be placed in the skull again.
Due to the complexity of the surgery, Boston Children's Hospital surgeons need an extra helper to help with the surgical planning, the helper comes from 3D printing. Bentley's skull model is 3D printed by optical data from the head scan so that the surgeon can practice on the plastic model of the patient's skull before entering the operating room, providing them with the necessary extra preparation. The 3D printed skull was used to determine how much of the 100 cubic centimeter externalized brain can be placed back into the skull.
The six-hour operation was performed on May 24, 2016, because during this period Bentley's skull was strong enough to withstand surgery, and further brain swelling may have a greater risk of rupture. The surgeon first expels the cerebrospinal fluid from Bentley's brain and then further cuts the skull so they can return the patient's brain to the head. The excised bone is used to close the fissure. Although the surgery went smoothly, Bentley needed two more follow-up procedures, first adding a flow and then draining the fluid from his brain.
Bentley is now seven months old, and although the doctors are still not sure what he will do in the future, he looks healthy now. Given that their son has overcome this adversity, Sierra and Dustin still have hope for him, but refused to say more: "We just have to go step by step," Sierra told the Washington Post.
