Future POCT may account for half of the in vitro diagnosis

Release date: 2016-01-20

Instant detection is one of the fastest growing areas of laboratory medicine. POCT, it sounds very distant, but once you mention the blood glucose meter or pregnancy test strip, everyone will understand. In recent years, the need for doctors to deliver faster, cheaper, and more reliable results has driven this market.

As a dynamically developed test method, POCT has been able to detect multiple indicators, including blood glucose, blood gas/electrolytes, blood clotting, cardiac/tumor markers, and drug/alcohol testing.

With the continuous introduction of immunochromatography, colloidal gold technology, electroluminescence, time-resolved fluorescence technology, biosensor technology and biochip technology, the development of POCT has also gained a strong pillar.

The rapid growth of POCT is not unreasonable. “POCT can quickly obtain results, greatly shorten the sample turnaround time, and the instrument is small and convenient. It can be tested at low cost with only a small amount of specimens.” The characteristics of POCT determine the application site is extremely extensive and future. It will occupy half of the in vitro diagnostic market.

In fact, a large amount of time in traditional diagnosis is wasted in sample transportation, pre-processing, organization, labeling, entry, distribution, etc., and the core response and analysis time is extremely low. In contrast, POCT has streamlined the steps, retaining only the core of the “sampling-analysis-quality control-output” step, which greatly shortens the diagnosis time and facilitates the patient's visit at the best time.

The growth of POCT reflects the constant introduction of new tests in clinical practice and the replacement of older tests with faster, smaller, and often more reliable diagnoses.

“Those (tests) are being used in outpatient clinics and doctors' offices. They are simple techniques, testing a card or a kit, just like a pregnancy test strip or a quick flu test, so there is no need to buy a large instrument. People who operate are also easy. This is one of the reasons for their increasing popularity,” said Dr. James H. Nichols, deputy director of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM).

Traditional rapid diagnosis, such as vaginal secretion detection of bacterial vaginosis, urine analysis of hemoglobin a1c, or creatinine blood test for kidney damage, has been integrated into the detection of HIV and other infectious diseases.

Further standardizing and strengthening POCT management, promoting the rational allocation, safe and effective use of POCT in hospitals, and giving full play to the value of use are the focus of the future development of the POCT industry.
