Protein chip big price cuts!

Researchers use low-cost plastic and printed paper blanks to create a new protein diagnostic substrate that not only reduces costs, but also improves the accuracy of infectious disease diagnosis.

In recent years, health care researchers focus on early diagnosis and prevention of diseases is increasing. Early and accurate diagnosis is extremely important, especially for developing countries where the primary cause of death is infection. One way to achieve early diagnosis is to develop a simple biomedical detection device.

As a detection device, we need it to have environmental stability, free handling, and low cost. Current biodetection devices are either made of glass or are very expensive metal substrates, which creates problems for widespread use and transportation in diagnostics and research.

In order to solve the problem of expensive substrates, the Korea Advanced Institute of Technology (KAIST) has developed a new protein detection platform that can use printed paper blanks to make substrates. The use of printed paper blanks to make substrates is not only flexible, easy to handle, but also saves 1000 times more cost than traditional glass substrates, saving 100 times more than plastic substrates.

Using a method called initiated chemical vapour deposition (iCVD), they immobilize proteins (fluorescently labeled proteins or antibody fragments) to indicate the presence of pathogens, without destroying the substrate. Compared with other methods, the iCVD method does not require a water-soluble state, and is better at combining various substrates without degrading proteins.

Currently, the research team has applied the iCVD process to traditional substrates such as glass, as well as to inexpensive alternatives such as paper and vinyl films to reduce the cost of protein chip manufacturing. They will continue to improve the performance and operation of paper-based biochips in 2015.
